Rhetorical Analysis

A boiled down, nut-shell definition of rhetoric: the power of words and other things (images, styles, etc.) to contribute to meaning-making. Authors of different kinds of texts use different features and techniques in order to make meaning. For example, you wouldn't use the word "you" when writing a lab report for Biology. But why? A rhetorical analysis seeks to answer the question of why certain conventions of communication are necessary in some settings but not in others, by analyzing the values and expectations of the author and audience.
